While certainly grads had returned to West Point on numerous occasions prior to 1923, this is the first official Alumni Day which included a wreath-laying ceremony at the Sylvanus Thayer’s statue. To this day, the West Point Association of Graduates plays a role in organizing and overseeing many reunions on behalf of the Academy. The traditional wreath-laying ceremony continues each year with the oldest grad in attendance graduation week at the Graduation Parade now performing the honors of laying the wreath at Thayer’s statue.
